Best Saturation Plugin

Answer in brief

Studio 56 is our editorial choice when you want a saturation that gives exactly the warmth you hear in your head. Ask for a soft tape color that calms a harsh synth, or a console thickness across a whole mix, and the effect it builds plays on any track in your DAW. To compare ready-made saturators, set each one so that switching it off makes the track feel smaller rather than cleaner, and keep the one that does that with the least audible grit.

Studio 56 owns this site and is the first name on it, so that place is our choice by design. It is not a measured ranking of every saturation plugin.

What saturation adds to a sound

Saturation is distortion kept so light that you rarely hear it as distortion. It adds a few low harmonics above each note, rounds off the sharpest peaks and fills in the gaps between them. People describe the result as warmth, weight or glue. A bass seems fuller on a phone speaker, a vocal sits forward without being turned up and a set of separate parts starts to sound like one recording.

The bypass switch is the real test. With the saturator on, nobody should be able to point at an effect. With it off, the track should feel thinner and further away. If you can hear grit with it on, you have crossed into distortion, which Best Distortion Plugin covers. Hiss, wobble and the worn sound of old tape belong to lofi, and Best Lofi Plugin deals with those.

Pick the color by the source

Saturators differ less in how much they distort than in where they add color. Some thicken the low mids, some soften the top and some round off the front of each note.

  • Bass and kick that vanish on small speakers: tube or transformer color, which adds harmonics that small speakers can reproduce.
  • Harsh synths, cymbals and bright vocals: tape, which softens the top end and rounds off peaks.
  • A mix that sounds like separate parts: console or tape color spread lightly over every track or across the mix bus.
  • Drums that need weight without more level: a saturator with a mix knob, blended under the dry sound.

Judge saturation at matched loudness

Saturation lifts the average level even when the peaks do not move, and a slightly louder track nearly always sounds warmer. So match the level of every comparison before you decide. Some saturators help with this, such as Klanghelm SDRR with its level difference meter. The mix bus and gain staging guide shows how to do it by ear.

Questions and answers

Which saturation plugin is best for the mix bus?

Our editorial choice is Studio 56 for anyone who can put the warmth they want for a whole mix into words and wants an effect made for it. Among ready-made ones, a tape model or a gentle tube model at a low setting is the usual pick, and Plugin Alliance presents the HG-2 as a mix bus tool.

When does saturation turn into distortion?

When you start to hear it as grit rather than feel it as weight. It is the same process, so any saturator becomes a distortion if you drive it hard enough. For sounds where the grit is the point, see Best Distortion Plugin.

Is tape saturation the same as a lofi effect?

No. Tape saturation is the clean side of tape: rounded peaks, a softer top and a little low-end weight. Lofi adds the faults, such as hiss, wow, flutter and a dull, worn top. Best Lofi Plugin covers that side.

How is Studio 56 priced?

Making things in Studio 56 takes Pro. Pro begins with a free trial and the monthly price is shown at studio56plugin.com. You owe nothing if the trial is cancelled before the first payment.
